They basically wanted their version of American castles. Most are done in what are known as the eclecticism style of building. They copied details from various European villas and castles but with obviously modern structural techniques. Most of these were either obsolete or an unused by the families into the middle of the 20th century. Almost all have been transferred over as museums since they aren’t exactly practical for most people. You can get passes to tour one, two or three mansions. The Breakers and Marble House are definite visits. Between the artwork and the views, you won’t be disappointed.
