Bamberg, Germany is a medieval town and Unesco World Heritage Site. If you have a chance to spend a day there on your cruise, you will not be disappointed. There are a few places that you will definitely want to see. The first is the Bamberg Cathedral. It’s beautiful from the outside, and you can take a guided tour of the inside. From there, you might want to set out on foot, or you can try a bus tour. There are some quick bus tours that will get you around the city, or there are hop-on hop-off options so you can spend more time in each place. Whichever way you choose, you will want to stop at the Old Town Hall and Upper Bridge for some interesting architecture and great views.

A stop at St. Michael’s Monastery is also recommended. Unfortunately, you cannot currently see the inside due to some restorations, but there is a great view from the terrace. Then you can grab lunch from a highly rated restaurant like Salino or Kachelofen.

Storm the Castle

For the second half of your day, you might want to check out Altenburg Castle. It sits on the city’s highest hill and you can walk up the tower. Some parts of the castle are closed in the morning, so if you decide to see it first be aware of this. There are also several museums in Bamberg. The Historical Museum of Bamberg has many old antiques and crafts while the Natural History Museum highlights the vegetation in the region as well as local animal life. Finally, you can end your day in Bamberg with a trip to a brewery. The area serves a beer called Rauchbier, which you can get from Schlenkerla. There can be long lines there, but it is usually easy to get served. Enjoy your trip!
