One of the best ways to get a view of the whole city is to take the cable car from the base of Mt. Srd, a 412 ft mountain, to the Napoleonic-era fort at the peak. This ride will give you a gorgeous view . But be aware that since this is a popular tourist destination, the lines can be long at times. You can walk up or down the mountain. But if you only have one day in Dubrovnik, that’s probably not the best use of your time.
Getting Around Dubrovnik
Since the port is somewhat of a distance from the city center, you may want to take a taxi to the center of town. Dubrovnik has been a major port city since the 1200s and is filled with many Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings and fountains. You can spend the day just wandering around. There are over 60 cafes and restaurants in the city, so there is sure to be something to appeal to even the pickiest eater.
Visitors can also walk the city’s walls, a tradition that has been in place since the Middle Ages. Walking the walls not only provides a way to see the city, but since they are 80 feet high, you get a great view of the Adriatic Sea as well.

Next, take a ride on the Dubrovnik Cable Car up to Mount Srđ. The short ascent offers increasingly dramatic views. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping vista of the Old Town, Lokrum Island, and the endless Adriatic. There’s also a small museum and a restaurant at the summit/ This makes it a great spot to pause for photos or a drink while taking it all in.
Back in the Old Town, make time to explore the Rector’s Palace. This was once the seat of government for the historic Republic of Ragusa. Now the palace is a museum showcasing period furnishings, artifacts, and art. Its elegant courtyard and blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture offer a quieter, more reflective experience compared to the busy streets outside.
To end your day, unwind at Banje Beach, located just a short walk from the Old Town gates. With its clear turquoise water and views of the city walls in the background, it’s one of the most scenic beaches in the area.
