If you’re searching for something to do while your cruise ship is docked in Halifax, you don’t have to look far. There’s plenty to explore this gorgeous destination. Whether you have a full day or just a few hours, there are certainly many sightseeing opportunities to be had.  If you are lucky enough to be in Halifax in July be sure to go to the military tattoo.  It’s about a 20 minute walk from the cruise terminal.  You will see 2000 military performers, bag pipers, and other musical performers.  There’s plenty to see other times of the year as well.

Peggy’s Cove

Take the tour, which is both guided and gives you free time to explore, to Peggy’s Cove.  The cove is one of Nova Scotia’s most beautiful destinations. Begin at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, just 10 minutes from the Port of Halifax, and enjoy the overview given on the 50 minute drive west to the cove.   From there, you can see Peggy’s Lighthouse, one of the world’s most popular lighthouse attractions. Use the free time to explore the small gift shops and artisan works in the fishing community. Also enjoy fresh seafood in the various restaurants and cafes.

The Halifax Citadel

Citadel Hill is located high atop Halifax and has an amazing view of the harbor and the city.   The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site gives visitors the opportunity to explore the history of the fortress.  You can literally walk the same paths the soldiers did, experiencing the incredible military history of the Citadel.

Halifax Seaport Farmers Market

Right off the ship, you will find dozens of vendors, food stalls, wine booths and souvenir shops.   If you want more than a snack, consider the Food Tour which starts at the Farmers Market. It takes you on a six block walk through the residential neighborhoods where you can try many local foods.
