The Isles of Scilly, off the southwestern coast of England, are an ideal holiday destination for those looking to escape the crowds and unwind in luxury. From fun-filled days on the beach to evenings out on one of the islands’ lively pub circuits, this part of Britain has something to offer everyone. Here are some of our favorite things to do when visiting the Isles of Scilly!

Things to Do on the Isles of Scilly

Hire a boat, but get ready to fish. The weather in these islands can be unpredictable, so you’ll want to bring your fishing gear and try your luck at catching dinner. Eat outside with a scenic ocean view while you wait for your fish to cook over an open fire. Bring along some sunscreen as well as seasickness pills: boats tend to rock back and forth depending on wave height. This place is famous for its wild horses!

Things to Eat

The traditional local cuisine includes a variety of sea creatures and seafood, such as razor clams, cockles, crab, mussels and oysters. The area also produces potatoes, carrots and onions as well as a plethora of dairy products such as cream (locally known as Brymlin) and cheese. Most meals are accompanied by some kind of fresh bread, which is made locally. Visitors can taste all kinds at local markets or farm stalls.

Where to Sleep

While you can certainly rent a house or cottage and make it your home away from home, staying in a hotel is often easier if you’re planning a short trip. Even if you don’t have kids in tow, it’s nice to not be tied down to cleaning dishes and laundry while you vacation. If you choose to stay at one of St. Mary’s hotels, book ahead.

How to Get to Isles of Scilly

Getting to and from The Isles of Scilly is fairly easy. You can fly into St. Mary’s Airport, located just off-shore in Samson Harbor, or arrive by ferry or yacht (you’ll probably want to rent a car while you’re there). St. Mary’s Airport offers daily flights from London Gatwick and seasonal flights from Southampton between April and October, which are operated by Flybe and Aer Lingus.
