Located only about an hour from the city of Heidelberg, Speyer makes for an extraordinary day trip. It contains a lot of medieval history as well as many sites to explore. Here’s what you should do if you have just one day in Speyer, Germany.

Palatinate

This historical museum allows you to see some of Speyer’s interesting history. You can see things that depict their prehistoric settlements as well as the Protestant revolution. A huge part of the history of Speyer has to do with it’s wine making. It’s actually one of the best wine regions in Germany and you can see some of the history of it with a visit to the Palatinate. On display there is a grape wine that’s over 1,600 years old and considered to the oldest one of its type in the world. There’s also a rather large wooden wine press on display.

The Jewish Courtyard

If you want to spend a little bit of time outdoors then you must visit the Jewish Courtyard. Here you can see ruins of both a synagogue and a traditional ritual bath. Both of them date back to around the 1100s. You can also see the underground bathrooms that have been in existence for centuries with virtually no change to their appearance.

Trinity Church in Speyer

This church is rather impressive to look at. It has a large gate that dates back to the Middle Ages. The interior of it is also all original and dates back to the early part of the 18th century.
