if you’re looking for something different, consider Gibraltar. This is the United Kingdom-owned peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea, off of Spain and Morocco. Here are some reasons why Gibraltar should be on your radar as an alternative vacation destination. This tiny British territory on Spain’s southern coast is one of Europe’s last great under-the-radar destinations.

Founded around 824BC, Gibraltar has had a tumultuous history. Its original inhabitants were Phoenicians who were in turn driven out by Carthaginians and Romans. The Spanish took control of Gibraltar in 1462. And most recently in 1704 when they captured it from its British occupants. There are plenty of historic sites to visit including St Michael’s Cave. Neanderthal skulls have been found there, and there are a number of WWII gun emplacements to explore.

Gibraltar Beaches

If you’re looking for a swim-and-sun vacation, Gibraltar has some of the most incredible beaches in Europe. Activities like diving and boating are also available for those who want to enjoy water sports. Plus, did we mention how blue it is?

There’s so much to do in Gibraltar it could keep you busy for a lifetime. Climb Gibraltar’s famous rock formations for stunning panoramic views. Walk around town, visiting historic landmarks like St. Michael’s Cave, Main Street, and (of course) The Rock itself. Take a day trip to Tarifa on Spain’s southern coast for exciting activities like windsurfing or paragliding.

Small but Fun

Gibraltar may be small, but it’s packed with things to do. There are a ton of shops, restaurants and cafes around every corner, not to mention all of its exciting attractions. The Rock of Gibraltar itself—the steep limestone promontory that has stood for thousands of years—is visited by hordes of tourists each year; there are also dozens of bird species that make their homes in Gibraltar’s caves and crevices.

Gorgeous Scenery

There are several reasons why Gibraltar is perfect for a vacation. But perhaps none is more obvious than its picturesque natural beauty. From high peaks overlooking fantastic beaches to lush valleys and peaceful coves, it’s hard to beat. It truly feels like you’re in paradise. And if you want to explore even more of that natural splendor, you can always go diving or snorkeling at one of many aquatic attractions in and around its landmass.

Beautiful Flowers and Plants

Gibraltar’s flower markets offer a huge array of beautiful, colorful flowers and plants that are hard to find in other European countries. If you have a green thumb or are just someone who loves flowers, it would be easy to spend an entire day at Gibraltar’s beautiful flower markets. Gibraltar has excellent weather. During most of your stay, you can expect a sunny, pleasant day – but not too hot! Average daily temperatures range from an average high of 27°C (80°F) in July to an average low of 17°C (63°F) in January.
